SZA’s Announces Official Release Date for Debut Album ‘CTRL’

SZA is finally about to deliver her highly-anticipated debut album to fans.

During an interview with Billboard, SZA finally confirmed the release date for her upcoming studio project, CTRL, revealing that it is set to drop on February 3. That means that in just one week, fans will have new SZA tunes coming straight to their ears.

While speaking to the music outlet, the vocalist also revealed her writing process for her latest single, “Drew Barrymore.”
“I [wrote about] my younger life, which was haphazard: being at ­sleepaway camp away from my parents, being the only black girl, not even noticing until I got older, dealing with boys, self-hate, growth, and God,” she said. “It’s the first time I’m literally writing about my life instead of figuratively writing about it.”

SZA also says that a lot of her inspiration for the project came from candid conversations with Rick Rubin.

“I had this mentality that ‘more is more,’ more reverb, more background [vocals]. I played him a bunch of songs, and he would tell me, The more you take away from any piece, the more room you create for everything else to be beautiful and grow.’ I never felt that before, the editing urge,” she says. “Once you strip everything down, you’re forced to say something.”

CTRL is available on Feb. 3.
