 2019 has been a huge year for BTS in almost every respect. They reached new heights and became not just an unexpected phenomenon coming from Asia, but one of the most popular musical acts of any genre in every country. They proved themselves many times over, and nowhere is that more apparent than in their home country of South Korea.
The septet have officially scored the biggest album of the year in South Korea, and anyone who has been watching their world domination over the past 12 months shouldn’t be surprised by this fact. TS’s Map of the Soul: Persona has sold 3.69 million copies in the country since it’s April release, and that sum is easily enough to give the band the No. 1 title of 2019. In fact, it wasn’t even a close competition. With 3.69 million units sold, Map of the Soul: Persona doesn’t just grab the title of the bestselling release of the year, it’s now the bestselling album of all time in the country. Within a month of the set’s street date, it had already broken the record for the most copies sold of any album in South Korean history. Since it hit that milestone, it has continued to perform well, moving several hundred thousand more albums. BTS claims the bestselling album for the second year in a row, which isn’t an uncommon feat in South Korea. In 2018, their compilation Love Yourself: Answer snagged the highest rung on the year-end list of the bestselling titles, giving the band their first such placement. Map of the Soul: Persona reached No. 1 in a number of countries when it was released this past spring, and it produced a number of hit singles, like lead cut “Boy with Luv” with Halsey and “Make It Right” with Lauv, both of which also reached songs rankings in territories the world over. With every passing year, BTS performs better and better in many nations, but they will always be loved in their home country more than anywhere else.
