Fans of R.E.M. moved quickly to offer help after touring musician Scott McCaughey suffered a “major” stroke – raising nearly $82,000 of support money in just one day.
McCaughey, who’s also frontman of The Young Fresh Fellows and The Minus 5, first worked with R.E.M. in 1994 and remained a member of the live unit until the band split in 2011. He played guitar and keyboards and also contributed backing vocals. McCaughey’s wife Mary Winzig said on the GoFundMe page she’d set up: “As many of you know, Scott McCaughey has suffered a major stroke and is receiving treatment in San Francisco. To all of you who have expressed love and interest in helping him, we have set up this Go Fund Me account to help defray the steep costs of Scott’s medical bills and extensive ongoing physical and speech therapy in the future. “He is still in ICU and has a long, difficult road ahead to recover, but with his unsinkable spirit (and with time and hard work) we know that he’ll come back from this and be back in your town rocking soon.” At time of writing, the fund total stood at $94,000 from a stated target of $75,000, with 1,110 donors having pledged financial support. McCaughey said in a 2017 interview with NoDepression: “I just love music and I love being the guy who sings his own songs — or shouts them. I love being that guy in a band with Young Fresh Fellows. I love doing my own thing in Minus 5. I love being in other bands and playing great music.” Speaking of some of his extensive range of projects, including additional work with R.E.M. exes Peter Buck and Mike Mills, he reflected: “That's just a dream come true for a rock and roll geek like I am. It's never an ego thing with me. I feel so lucky that I have a life where I get to play music.”

Former Dream singer Melissa Schuman has accused Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter of raping her.
Writing on her personal blog, Schuman shared her story of being sexually assaulted by the boy band star during a house party sometime in the early 2000s. Schuman claims that the incident, in which Carter performed oral sex on her against her wishes before forcing her to do the same for him, occurred in a bathroom in Carter's Santa Monica, California apartment when she was 18 and he was 22. Afterwards, she claims Carter then took her to his bedroom and forced himself upon her despite her protests. The alleged assault occurred after the two were cast in the same "made-for-TV movie," 2004's The Hollow. Schuman says the unwanted encounter began after the pair kissed. "After kissing for a moment, he took my hand and brought me into the bathroom adjacent to his office," she writes. "He shut the door and we continued to kiss. I asked him what we were doing in there. He didn't respond and continued to kiss me. He then picked me up, put me on the bathroom counter and started to unbutton my pants. I told him I didn't want to go any further. He didn't listen. He didn't care." She claims Carter then removed her pants against her will and performed oral sex on her, ignoring her demands that he stop. Frightened, she turned the bathroom lights off so she wouldn't see anything. "He kept turning the light back on because he told me he wanted to look at me," she writes. "I remember thinking at that point that maybe after this he will just stop, but he didn't." After "someone in the house knocked on the bathroom door," Carter allegedly took her to another bathroom where he then "took off his pants" and demanded oral sex. "I will never forget this moment," she continues. "...He sat himself on the bathroom counter and asked me to perform oral sex on him. I declined; he was upset. He told me, 'I did it for you, and it's only right you do it for me.'" Afterwards, Schuman writes that Carter took her to his bedroom, "threw [her] on the bed" and climbed on top of her where he raped her. "I told him that I was a virgin and I didn't want to have sex," she adds. "I told him that I was saving myself for my future husband. I said it over and over again. He whispered in my ear as to entice me, 'I could be your husband.'" Schuman says she felt "scared and trapped" as he was "stronger and much bigger" than she was. In the aftermath of the incident, Schuman claims Carter harassed her by calling her incessantly and leaving voicemails for weeks, including "one last nasty, angry message." When she told her then-manager about the assault, she was told her "abuser had the most powerful litigator in the country" and that making her story public would hurt her career. "I certainly don't want to be 'known' for this," she writes at the end of her post. "I never wanted anybody to know about my story. I wanted to lock it in a box in my mind and let the memories slowly suffocate as time went on. I feel I have an obligation now to come forward with the hope and intention to inspire and encourage other victims to tell their story. We are stronger in numbers. If you are reading this and you have been assaulted, know you don’t have to be silent and you are not alone. I know it's scary. I'm scared. I believe you. I stand with you and together I hope we can bring light to things that have been lost in the darkness for so long." Nick has responded and says the sexual encounter was consensual. NYE 2018 - San Diego, CA David Cassidy, the 'Partridge Family' heartthrob who sold millions of records and became a 70's 80's teen pop Icon, is dead.
Cassidy died in a Florida hospital after his organs failed. Family sources told TMZ, David had been on life support since Monday. Doctors advised the family Tuesday the only way David could survive was with a liver transplant, but he was not a candidate because he would never survive surgery. The family decided at around noon to remove life support. A number of family members were present when David died, including brother Shaun, Patrick and Ryan, his children Beau and Katie, along with various nephews and his ex-wife Sue Cassidy. David was in need of a kidney transplant but ultimately doctors said it was futile. His liver and other organs shut down and early Sunday his son and ex-wife were summoned to the hospital to say goodbye. Cassidy battled alcoholism for most of his adult life. He's survived by son Beau, daughter Katie -- who stars in "Arrow" -- half-brothers Shaun, Patrick and Ryan, step-mother and co-star Shirley Jones and ex-wife Sue Shifrin-Cassidy. Mariah Carey has reportedly signed to JAY-Z's Roc Nation after firing her former manager.
Page Six reports that Mariah is making serious moves after firing her former manager Stella Bulochnikov earlier this month. “[Mariah’s] cleaning house. She is getting legitimate people, assistants, a lawyer, and Stella is not happy about it,” an "insider" reportedly told the publication. Although there were previously reports that her boyfriend, Brian Tanaka, had taken over as her manager, he is reportedly her creative director. “Previously, there were all kinds of people involved [in her career] and Mariah didn’t even know those people," the insider told Page Six. "She had to distance herself from all that and she’s now cleaning house." |
