BTS has just taken Las Vegas by storm on the carpet at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 21). This is the first time ever that a K-pop group is nominated for a category at the BBMAs. The group was all smiles posing in black suits for photographers and their ever-devoted A.R.M.Y., who waited since the early morning to catch a glimpse of the “Not Today” superstars stateside. In Young M.A's new video for “Self M.Ade,” she reflects on her come up and presents a good summation of why she is self-made. Helmed by Guy and M.A, the visual features the “OOOUUU” rapper getting in a Hyundai that turns into her dream car – an Audi R8. Throughout the clip, M.A. details how she build her buzz – from packing her own CDs to selling merchandise and counting the profits. We later see M.A in the church has she gives thanks to the Almighty for her blessings. At the end of the video, a customer comes through fiending for some merchandise. Young M.A’s grind has certainly paid off. The 25-year-old rapper recently garnered two nominations for the 2017 BET Awards. M.A is up for Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist.
Camila Cabello and Charli XCX got a collaboration brewing.
On Friday, Charli, who has been a vocal supporter of Camila on social media, tweeted about the former Fifth Harmony star’s new single, gushing, “‘Crying in the Club’ is sooo good! …@Camila_Cabello, u get ittttt” Hours later, Camila responded with an exciting yet cryptic “I frickin can’t wait for people to hear what we cooked up,” indicating a collaboration between the two pop stars. However, whether the song or songs in question are for Camila’s solo debut album or Charli’s own record, due out in 2018, remains to be seen.
Pentatonix member Kirstin Maldonado is stepping into the spotlight. The singer from the all-star a capella group unveiled her debut solo single on Friday, May 19. Featuring a thunderous beat and mildly tropical electronic production, “Break a Little” is an emotional pop anthem that captures the sadness that lingers after a failed relationship. “I’m so proud of ‘Break a Little,'” Maldonado shared in a statement, adding, “I always wanted to write a sad song that sounds happy. I think everyone can relate to this emotion. It’s about longing for something. You’re attracted to a vice or person you know you shouldn’t come back to, but you can’t help it.”
Iggy Azalea's Digital Distortion maybe dropping soon, she has unveiled her brand new single “Switch” today (May 19), a club-ready collaboration with Anitta that’s eagerly inviting anyone within earshot to head straight to the dancefloor.
Iggy told People in an interview that the song is primarily a battle cry for women. “I wanted to make a song that could be fun to dance to, but the lyrics when you really listen to them are very powerful,” she said, adding “it’s not a victimized sexualization” but, on the contrary, more a matter of “a woman being in control of what I want to do and when I want to go and when I want to stop.” Azalea added that Anitta’s feature seemed like a natural fit. “[The song] has that tropical vibe and a Latin flavor people are really enjoying right now,” she said. “I wanted to find the perfect girl who already had that kind of style and as soon as I saw her videos on YouTube, I was like ‘This is the perfect person!’ She’s very unapologetic and strong but super feminine. We clicked straight away.” The “Switch” video’s still awaiting release, but Azalea insists it’ll be worth the wait. “It’s sort of this fantasy safari of badass women,” she said. “Some of the stuff I would see back on camera and think to myself, ‘Wow, this must seem like it’s all green-screen,’ but it’s really happening! I feel really nostalgic thinking about the music videos I liked as a child and not knowing how much was reality or what was computer-generated. I want to be able to give that to the kids and adults of my generation.”
The fight against ticket bots and the inflated resale market is about to meet a formattable foe. Queen and Adam Lambert recently announced an official partnership with UK-based Twickets, a peer-to-peer online reseller that only allows face-value prices. The group’s websites and social media direct fans to use the service to sell any extra tickets for the shows, so that others can buy them for reasonable prices. It’s a godsend for those that missed out – tour tickets, priced between £69 and £79, sold out within hours and are listing for about ten times as much on secondary services.
Twickets is currently not available in North America, but the concept could very well make its way here soon – well OK, it attempted to land in Toronto, but the lite version that simply retweeted fans didn’t exactly go anywhere. Here’s how it works. Ticket sellers aren’t charged by the full UK site at all to list tickets, so it’s a painless way to get rid of extras if plans change. On the other hand, buyers are only charged a 10% fee by Twickets – much more reasonable than the exorbitant mark-ups resellers like StubHub often have. The website offers all kinds of protection for both buyer and seller, so there’s less risks involved than through classifieds listings like Kijiji or Craigslist. And it’s not just for concert tickets, either! A quick scroll through of the front page shows tickets available for cricket matches, live podcast recordings, orchestral performances, comedy tours, and more. A special landing page for the Queen + Adam Lambert tour is available to make things easier for fans, but unfortunately there’s no equivalent set up for the North American leg. It seems that the UK is a few steps ahead of the US and Canada in this regard. The use of ticket bots was criminalized in a bill that passed in April, whereas Canadian governments are still figuring out a solution in the wake of an uproar over scalping during The Tragically Hip’s 2016 tour. If you want to know more about how Twickets works – or want to see an example of a system that will hopefully be implemented in North America soon – check out the website’s About section. Queen + Adam Lambert aren’t the only artists to have partnered with the service. Adele, Ed Sheeran, One Direction, Pixies, Mumford & Sons, and more have also made similar efforts to aid fan-focused resell markets – so hopefully North American musicians will also catch on, too. Queen + Adam Lambert UK Tour: Sat 25 November – 3 Arena, Dublin Sun 26 November – SSE Arena, Belfast Tue 28 November – Echo Arena, Liverpool Thu 30 November – Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham Fri 1 December – Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle Sun 3 December – The SSE Hydro, Glasgow Tue 5 December – Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham Wed 6 December – First Direct Arena, Leeds Fri 8 December – Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield Sat 9 December – Arena, Manchester Tue 12 December – O2 Arena, London Wed 13 December – O2 Arena, London Fri 15 December – The SSE Arena, Wembley, London Sat 16 December – Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham
T-Pain just released T-Wayne -- his once-promised collaborative project with Lil Wayne, originally set to drop around 2009 — is finally live on Soundcloud. Also available for free download on the artists' shared website, it's a nostalgic rewind to an era when both T-Pain and Lil Wayne were at the apex of their careers.
Featuring a host of producers, the eight-track project includes a familiar-sounding beat from Bangladesh, the producer whose past work on "A Milli" made it one of Wayne's most successful singles. T-Wayne comes at an interesting time for T-Pain and Lil Wayne. Wayne's career remains in legal limbo thanks to his drawn-out dispute with Cash Money Records. Meanwhile, T-Pain has been in comeback mode, releasing new music and remixes at a steady clip in recent months (and playing a 2014 Tiny Desk concert that's been viewed on YouTube more than 10 million times).
Just days after Katy Perry officially announced the title of her fourth album, the cover artwork for Witness was released today, May 18.
Featuring a somewhat spooky ’80s new-wave motif, the album cover, which first appeared on Amazon, finds Perry posing with her hands over her eyes, her red lips parted as an eyeball peeks through her mouth. (Shut up and put your eyeball where your mouth is?) Witness is due out June 9. Listen to a preview of its title track, below: |
