Despite less than favorable reviews from critics and harsh criticisms from Jada Pinkett Smith and 50 Cent, the Tupac Shakur biopic, All Eyez on Me, had a great opening weekend at the box office. According to comScore (via PR Newswire), which tabulates worldwide box office receipts, AEOM earned an estimated $27.1 million in the U.S. for what is a $30.1 million worldwide bow. That’s not bad considering it was competing against tentpole movies like the animated flick Cars 3 (which debut at No. 1 with $53.5 million domestically) and the superhero flick Wonder Woman and the Tom Cruise-actioner The Mummy. The $40 million-budgeted movie, directed by Benny Boom, is expected to make a $50 million domestic total after playing a few weeks in the theaters. While that might be a low number, it’s still a big achievement for the film. Of course, it won’t come close to the enormously successful Straight Outta Compton biopic, which earned $161 million at the box office. Box Office Totals (U.S.): 1. Cars 3 – Disney – $53.5M 2. Wonder Woman – Warner Bros. – $40.8M 3. All Eyez On Me – Lionsgate – $27.1M 4. Mummy, The – Universal – $13.9M 5. 47 Meters Down – Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures – $11.5M
