Lorde‘s released another song from her upcoming Album and shared the album’s release date. “I wanted you to have a new song from Melodrama, a new chapter of the story – this is ‘Liability’,” the singer-songwriter tweeted on Thursday (March 9), adding, “oh, and also, Melodrama has an official release date: JUNE 16.” The second song from Lorde’s sophomore release is a somber piano ballad, much different than the rollicking-verging-on-manic pop highs of lead single “Green Light.” But the song finds Lorde examining a different facet of post breakup grief: Self examination. “Baby really hurt me, crying in the taxi,” she begins in a hush, before singing that she “go home into the arms of the girl that I love, the only love I haven’t screwed up / She’s so hard to please, but she’s a forest fire.” Lorde soon makes it clear(er) that she’s referring to herself. “They say ‘you’re a little much for me, you’re a liability,'” she sings, striking an effective tone of highly-relatable self pity (peppered with piercing self awareness) and, yes, more than a pinch of the titular melodrama. Listen to Lorde’s “Liability” below. Lorde performs on Saturday Night Live on March 11.
