Stephen Paddock has been identified as the gunman in the shooting at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival in Las Vegas that left at least 50 people dead and more than 200 wounded, police said. The shooter, a 64-year-old from Mesquite, Nevada, was firing from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel down at the festival, which was located in a fairgrounds area on Las Vegas Boulevard. Officers responded to that hotel room and engaged the suspect, killing him, police said. They do not believe at this time that there were any other shooters, despite reports of multiple gunmen. Police said they do not have an accurate number of victims yet. Police have also not yet released a motive. Paddock does not have any known ties to terrorist organization. Several SWAT teams were sent to the hotel immediately after the first reports of the shooting at 10:08 p.m., and officers reported being pinned down by gunfire, according to emergency radio traffic. Shortly before midnight the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that “one suspect is down,” and soon thereafter the police said they did not believe there were any more active gunmen.
