Kesha unveiled a rallying cry today (Sept. 19) titled “Here Comes the Change,” an empowering country-hued belter complete with tom-tom drums and a harmonica. It will appear on the soundtrack for On the Basis of Sex, the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic starring Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer. Kesha attends the 2018 Billboard Music Awards 2018 at the MGM Grand Resort International on May 20, 2018 in Las Vegas. “Here Comes the Change” is delivered with a lyric video that bridges the gap between the political activism of generations past and a new era of enacting change. A multicultural collective of young folks gather around a podium to protest, vote, and exercise their civic duty in front of a screen illuminated with footage of marches and protests. The video ends with a campaign from non-partisan nonprofit HeadCount, encouraging viewers to register to vote. The single’s artwork was designed by Shepard Fairey, the artist-activist who, most famously, created the “Hope” poster that served as the visual for Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. “I wanted to explore the legacy of political activists in our country throughout the years who have fought for equality and positive change,” Kesha wrote in a piece for Refinery29 explaining her new song. “The message is that the long, proud tradition of American social activism is alive and well. It’s being passed on to the next generation. It will continue to evolve one success at a time, and is as important as ever.” Watch the lyric video for “Here Comes the Change” below.
