Janelle Monae just released the introspective song "I Like That" Monday morning (Apr. 16). The mellow tune discusses the ways in which Monae didn't quite fit in growing up, and how she now celebrates the idiosyncrasies that set her apart.
"A little crazy, little sexy, little cool/ Little rough around the edges, but I keep it smooth/ I’m always left of center and that’s right where I belong/ I’m the random minor note you hear in major songs," Monae cleverly rhymes over a slinky beat and gospel-infused background vocals. Although Monae recalls being deemed "weird" in school for sporting thrift store Polos and severing her permed hair, she ultimately claims she wouldn't have wanted anything different for herself: "I always knew I was the shit." "I Like That" is the fourth single from Monae's upcoming third studio album, Dirty Computer, scheduled to drop Apr. 27. The latest track follows defiant banger "Django Jane," the groovy love song "Make Me Feel" and the daring empowerment anthem "PYNK" featuring Grimes.
