The HBO 60-minute special features Rapper J. Cole traveling to various cities through the Midwest and the South listening to people talk about issues that deeply affect them. Much of the music in the film appears on his platinum-selling album, 4 Your Eyez Only.
In the documentary, Cole teased a new song that wasn’t featured on the project in which he talks about religion and how it may not be helping people in modern times. Over somber violins and a piano groove, Cole raps, “God is real and he using me for a bigger purpose / So f— the world that will have you think that a n—- worthless / Sometimes I think that these verses can help a person way more than the one they read in churches.” Cole hopes that his documentary will open people’s eyes and ears, he said In an interview with The New York Times. “I felt like it would be mad powerful for black people to see black people talking to each other. And you see a rapper who’s considered one of the biggest in the game, just listening,” he said. “See how human they are, and see black men walk around with their daughters, and get a whole different perspective. If I’m listening, why can’t you listen?”
