Doja Cat has issued a statement following some major backlash she's received for allegedly making past racist remarks online.

DC, whose real name is Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini, took to Instagram on Sunday (May 24) to address the controversy after the hashtag #DojaCatIsOverParty began trending on Twitter just days earlier. Doja has been accused of taking part in past racist video chats and was called out for her 2015 song "Dindu Nuffin," which some call a racist slur mocking victims of police violence.

"I want to address what’s been happening on Twitter," the singer began her Instagram post. "I’ve used public chat rooms to socialize since I was a child. I shouldn’t have been on some of those chat room sites, but I personally have never been involved in any racist conversations. I’m sorry to everyone I offended."

Doja, whose father is South African actor Dumisani Dlamini, goes on to say she identifies as a "black woman" and that she's "very proud of where I come from."

The singer admits to writing the song "Dindu Nuffin," but says it was created in "response to people who often used that term to hurt me." She now recognizes that "it was a bad decision to use the term in my music."

"I understand my influence and impact and I’m taking this all very seriously. I love you all and I’m sorry for upsetting or hurting any of you. That’s not my character, and I’m determined to show that to everyone moving forward. Thank you," Doja concludes her statement.
