Charli XCX promised fans that new music was on the horizon. Just a few hours after tweeting that she was "going to release a lot of music this year," the pop star dropped a surprise new song Thursday (May 31) entitled "5 In the Morning."
The flashy banger marks some of Charli's most hip-hop-inspired work to date, backed primarily by rumbling bass and a sizzling trap-pop beat. The singer sniffs out the posers in the first verse, saying, "Think you're the sickest like you got diseases/ But you ain't got nothing on this." During the uncomplicated yet catchy chorus, Charli celebrates her own determination no matter the time of day: "I'm goin' all in/ It's 5 in the mornin', I'm busy ballin'/ I ain't even stoppin'/ It's 5 in the mornin', I'm so devoted." Prior to the new track, Charli -- along with Rita Ora, Bebe Rexha and Cardi B -- was the subject of some backlash for their anthemic collaboration, "Girls," which was tagged as falling prey to stereotypes about lesbian desire as conjured by the mostly male songwriters. Charli addressed the controversy, telling Rolling Stone "I apologize to any people I've offended by that." Fans will get to hear Charli's new tunes as she supports Taylor Swift on her Reputation Tour, alongside Camila Cabello. As far as an album to follow up last year's Pop 2 mixtape, Charli's kept details under wraps so far.
