On Tuesday, July 24, Bella Thorne released a series of tweets calling out the Teen Choice Awards for the ways in which category winners are chosen, claiming it's "gross" and "rigged".
"The fact we are even voting against each other is..." Bella began, before switching to another train of thought. "It f*cks [with] kids' heads like a beauty competition..." Bella then went on to announce that she's "#boycottingteenchoice besides it being rigged it’s just f*cked up," offering this suggestion for how the awards show could improve in a way that would make her support it: " [A] vote for the hottest is so gross. How about smartest? Or a charity category? How about we hype people up for doing good things not being hot." The Kissing Booth Cast Plays Truth or Dare Some fans have taken up the hashtag in response to her tweets, noting they'd also boycott the event. One wrote, "I completely agree. It is a form of favoritism and an overrated popularity contest that is unfair and fake." It's not clear yet if Bella's call to action will have an impact on how the awards show is run, though it seems like she won't be in attendance at this year's ceremony. Bella is nominated in several 2018 Teen Choice Awards categories, including Choice Drama Movie Actress and Choice Movie Ship (for Midnight Sun) and Choice Drama TV Actress (for Famous In Love).
